Manuel Joaquim Caldeira was born in Freixo de Espada à Cinta in 1953. Son of farmers, dedicated to the land and cultivation. A son of the land who decided never to leave his homeland behind. He started his activity at a very young age. At the age of 25, he buys his first vineyard a. A child's dream come to life which has grown until today. Also, he is one of the great ambassadors of the most Manueline village in Portugal, employing several families. With the strength and humility of a child, Manuel Caldeira, father of two, after several years connected to the largest cooperative in the region, decided in 2015 to build his first winery. Thus was born the Quinta dos Castelares project!

The Quinta
Quinta dos Castelares is located in Freixo de Espada à Cinta, in Douro Superior, framed by the Natural Park. In the production methods, we seek to preserve the ancient cultivation techniques combined with the most recent developments in viticulture, which lead to greater environmental sustainability and respect for the environment.

The low level of mechanisation - where the grapes are hand-picked onto small pallets - and the low yields per hectare are the best example of this. In the various vineyards that make up the Quinta, they seek to take advantage of the specificities of each location.

The Almirante vineyard has old vines over 40 years old planted under the guidance of the illustrious Douro viticulturist Gastão Taborda, with the most famous red Douro grape varieties, especially Touriga Nacional, which highlights the quality of Quinta's wines. Due to their age and altitude, the wines have a great elegance.

In the Congida vineyard, on the edge of the Douro, where the grapes reach greater maturity, they only plant red grape varieties to give body and structure. In Castelares, they take advantage of the difference in altitude and sun exposure. Here, they have the white grape varieties - in the highest parts, with a north-eastern soil exposure. This combination results in elegance and complexity.

Climate
The hot and dry Mediterranean-type microclimate combines harsh winters and hot summers with low rainfall.

Grape varieties
Predominance in reds in Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz. In the white ones, Códega de Larinho, Rabigato and Gouveio.

Winery
Built-in 2015, the winery is 2,100m² in size. Given the continuous growth and the strong affirmation in international markets. A new wine warehouse, with 1800m², was built in 2019.

The legacy
Even today, the vineyards benefit from the extraordinary life work of Mr. Gastão Taborda, an "unknown hero" of Duriense viticulture, whose research was decisive in the contemporary Douro.

He was the forerunner of the current Douro Viticulture Study Centre and was in Freixo de Espada à Cinta, his birthplace, where he applied his knowledge to the greatest extent. He dedicated his entire life studying its terroir, where he pioneered the discovery and dissemination of the great potential of Touriga Nacional, thus preventing its extinction in the Douro.

Freixo de Espada À Cinta
With the title of "The Manueline Village of Portugal", Freixo de Espada à Cinta is located near the border with Spain, overlooking the Douro River.

Land of myths and legends, the landscape is dominated by vineyards and olive groves, and every year nature presents us with the unique spectacle of Almond Blossom.

Framed by the River Douro, it is part of the International Douro Natural Park, where protected species, such as Bonelli's Eagle and the Egyptian Vulture, find their refuge in this hot and dry continental Mediterranean climate.

Manueline architecture dominates the town's historic centre, which almost always represents the discoveries of the Portuguese navigators. They help Portugal to give new worlds to the world, and it was here that several navigators were born.

This legacy of Portugal's collective history was the inspiration for Quinta dos Castelares' labels.
