Frederick von S' - Earl of Mértola
The Commander Portuguese António de Sousa, the first Marquis of Marialva, together with General Frederick von Schomberg, won the Battle of Montes Claros, the last step in the Portuguese Restoration War, contributing to the full sovereignty of Portugal.
After participating with his army in the overthrowing of King Alfonso VI of Portugal, on behalf of his brother Dom Pedro, he was rewarded with the Earl of Mértola title, a homestead in Mértola, and a lifetime annual pension.

This property was acquired by the Assis Costa Family about 50 years ago. In 2002, a new cycle of this property began, which led to the reconstruction and restructuring of existing agriculture, always based on principles of geobiology, environmental and food health, with the objective of preventing the disease or treating it. All the recovery carried out was not an easy project, as it is located in the heart of the Natural Park Guadiana Valley, where any construction is almost impossible, as long as there are no previous constructions.

It is 500 meters from Mértola Village, Municipality Headquarters and has an elevated location, so privileged that it allows a view of the horizon of about 30 to 40 km around it, seeing land belonging to the Municipalities of Almodôvar, Alcoutim and even from Spain. The Guadiana River is just 700 meters away.

Purity, Sustainability and Harmony

All its agricultural production, from wine to vegetables, fruit, nuts, teas, honey to olive oil, all are certified in organic farming by SATIVA. In this property everything was thought to the smallest detail, with the objective of preserving health or its recovery.

In addition to the vineyards, there are thousands of trees in production of dozens of varieties, with an emphasis on jojobeiras. All of its agriculture is mechanized and is treated without the use of chemicals.

It has several holes for capturing water and a large dam in addition to two lakes, being self-sufficient in water. All irrigation is computerized. There is also a lake with an island and waterfalls, populated with swans, ducks and Koi carp. There are also 4 Japanese tanks, with waterfalls, with Koi carp. And another dam / lake 80 mx 20 mx 4 m deep, with fresh water also with Koi carp, in a lower plane than the Main House with diverse vegetation, which includes coconut trees, bamboo, banana trees, giant stars, sugar cane , papyri of Egypt, etc., which acts as a biological freshwater pool.

There is also a system for the production of electricity by solar energy, (microgeneration), supplying EDP with the surplus of electrical production that it does not need to consume.

The wine and the vineyard
The vineyard is planted in the Vale do Guadiana National Park - a natural reserve, without any type of environmental or industrial pollution. It is planted on a hillside, with a south-east orientation and irrigated drop by drop. However, one of the secrets of the quality of this vineyard and the wine that it allows to produce is the bet on biodynamic organic farming, water treatment, the clayey shale subsoil and its Mediterranean climate.
