Alfrocheiro, the mysterious grape variety...

Alfrocheiro is a noble grape variety grown in several regions of Portugal such as Bairrada, Tejo, Douro and Alentejo but the most representative is in the Dão region. In Douro it is also known as "Tinta Bastardinha" or "Tinta Bastardeira" and in Viseu it is known as "Tinta Francesa" or "Tinta Francisca de Viseu".

Its origin is unknown but it is probably an indigenous portuguese grape variety. The first records where it is mentioned date from the beginning of the 20th century, in the Dão region, after the phylloxera.

At the beginning of the century (1909) it was mentioned by authors who studied the national grape varieties, as being linked to a white grape variety planted in the Dão region known today as "Douradinha". In the Douro region "Douradinha" is still referred to today as "Alfrocheiro Branco".

Alfrocheiro is a delicate grape variety that is sensitive to mildew, oidium and grey rot and requires experienced and careful viticulture to keep it healthy and fungus free. One of the characteristics of this variety is its early ripening which allows the grapes to stay in the vineyard for less time and be less exposed to the risks of nature. The vine is vigorous, so its fertility has to be controlled so that there is no dispersion of aromas and flavours.

Alfrocheiro grapes have a dark colour so they are often used in blends but in the Dão region they often originate varietal wines that express the full potential of this unique and special grape. Due to its rich and intense colour, some regions call it Alfrocheiro Preto.

Alfrocheiro wines are rich in colour, fruity, with aromas of wild fruit, especially blackberry and ripe wild strawberry. The taste is delicate, equally fruity, persistent, vibrant and with a great balance between tannins, acidity and fruit. They are wines with great ageing potential. When young they present an intense garnet colour with violet reflections. With age the colour turns ruby red, they lose their fruity aromas and gain complexity.
