Quinta dos Plátanos belongs to Estremadura Wine Region, with Alenquer as Denomination of Origin.

In the 17th century, it became an entailed estate and has belonged to the same wine producing family ever since. It is one of the oldest farms in Alenquer district, included in Aldeia Galega da Merceana parish.

In the middle of the 20th century, Artur de Menezes Corrêa de Sá, who was an agricultural expert but also concerned with banking, kept his attention focused on agricultural activities, mainly wine producing, and was one of the founders of the União dos Viticultores Portugueses (Union of Portuguese Wine Producers). He was still alive when his eldest son, José de Menezes Corrêa de Sá (who was already managing the estate), had vineyards planted with set spaces in between and wires keeping them in place; this made it possible to introduce machinery, first drawn by animals and then fully mechanized; spraying was even made from the air, which was one of the activities considered as pioneering. New wine making methods were learnt with the distinguished expert Mr. Batalha Reis and later, in the 50s, the wine cellar was completely refurbished; both allowed quality bottled wines, with the brand name «Plátanos», to appear in the 60s; even later, when the Wine Producing Region was established, their name changed to «Quinta dos Plátanos» and they were awarded the following prizes:

1988 Red Wine 3rd Prize in the contest for «Best Wine» organized by Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (Authority for Vineyards and Wine)
1992 Red Wine 1st Prize in the contest for «Best Wine» organized by Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (Authority for Vineyards and Wine)
2000 White Wine 2nd Prize in the «Best Estremadura Wines at the Producers» contest.
Recently, the wine cellar was equipped with stainless steel grape reception inverted pyramid and vats, the old concrete vats were newly covered and the algerian amphorae were adapted to the pump system and stainless steel shedder, therefore obtaining better maceration; the purpose of all this is to continue the process began centuries ago.

In the fields, the vineyards are under restructuring, with near 40 acres having been planted in the past two years with stocks rehabilitated in the region and included in the recently approved stumps, namely, National Touriga, French Touriga, Red Roriz, Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon; with them, alone or together with traditional regional stocks, it is our aim to produce more competitive wines. We also intend to plant 25 acres more and adapt some 15 acres. We further changed all the machines and other implements and we are now starting phase 2 of refurbishing the wine cellar.

It is worth mentioning that famous moscatello wines were produced here and already bottled, as happened in particular in 1881, when Viscount of Merceana, the grandfather of the present owner, was born.
