Quinta de San Michel is located in the village of Janas, Sintra, with a privileged view over the entire Serra de Sintra. Set within the historic wine-growing region of Colares, between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, and benefiting from unique climatic conditions, it became the starting point for a family project characterised by the limited production of exclusive wines that express the estate’s terroir and contribute to the economic and agricultural development of the region.
The vineyard was planted in 2013 across an area of two hectares with three indigenous grape varieties: Arinto and Malvasia de Colares — the latter being one of the few grape varieties in the world to have survived phylloxera — as well as Galego Dourado, planted in 2020, a variety widely used in the historic wines of Carcavelos.
In 2023, production was expanded with the planting of five additional hectares of vineyard, of which 2.5 hectares are dedicated to the principal grape varieties of the Colares region — Malvasia de Colares and Ramisco — planted in the region’s characteristic sandy soils.
Quinta de San Michel focuses on generating a positive impact on the regional economy, with its approach guided by innovation, change, irreverence and the quality of everything it does and produces.
The estate is distinguished by the production of unique and genuine wines, expressed through their aromas, flavours and methods of production. Traditional techniques, historical processes and the region’s identity are respected and combined with contemporary practices, alongside a scientific and environmentally conscious approach to vineyard management that prioritises prevention over direct pest control.
Wines are released only after a gradual bottle-ageing process. This means that all wines remain in the cellar for at least one year, followed by a minimum of two additional years of bottle ageing. Only through this process do the wines acquire the sensory and qualitative characteristics required for release to an increasingly knowledgeable and discerning wine-consuming market.
In 2017, a wine unique to the region was launched: the Malvarinto blend, resulting from the combination of Arinto and Malvasia. Considered one of Quinta de San Michel’s signature wines, it stands out for its singularity and the harmony achieved between these two exceptional grape varieties.
