Romana Vini produces its wines in two different properties: Quinta do Porto Nogueira and Quinta da Escusa. These two places are only 12 km apart from each other, belonging to different wine-growing regions. Quinta do Porto Nogueira is located in the Lisbon Region (DOC Óbidos) and Quinta da Escusa in the Tagus Region (DOC Santarém).
Quinta do Porto Nogueira is located in Alguber, Cadaval, which distances circa 70 km north from Lisbon. Having its origins back to the first half of the XVIII century, this place was in the possession of the same family until 1980. Thereafter around 1980 it was donated to the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. It is a Romana Vini Estate since 2004.
The soil is clay, bearers of natural freshness, without watering, being kind of unique and marked by both the influence of a natural microclimate of the foothills of Serra de Todo-o-Mundo (“All-the-World Mountain”) and the proximity to the Atlantic Sea, which is 20 km away. Each portion of the 17 hectares vineyards in Quinta do Porto Nogueira – which are DOC Óbidos classified - is treated and valued as unique and different.
This natural freshness and salinity are excellent for the production of white grapes Arinto, Alvarinho, Encruzado, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay and very conducive to the production of red grapes, such as the Pinot Noir and Touriga Nacional.
Choosing Every Grape
Only the best-selected fruit is used in the winemaking process. They adopted a rigorous Grape Selection Process that assures the selection of the best grapes: pre-harvested grapes, bunches selection while harvesting and in the cellar, and final selection of berries on the table.
The Cellar
Only grapes harvested in their vineyards are used to produce their wines. The white grapes, when pressed, are fermented in small vats. Both our Mono-varietal and Reserva blend white wines are aged in French or American oak barrels under fine lees, with batonnage.
On the other hand, the red ones are gently trampled and macerated in mills, following the fermentation in small vats. Part of Harvest red wines and both Mono-varietal and Reserva blends are aged in French or American oak barrels from the well-known cooperages french Tonnellerie Séguin Moreau and Portuguese Tonnellerie JM Gonçalves.
