THE PRODUCER - João França
His childhood passion for the family farm in Bucelas and the strong relationship he had with his grandfather Sérgio Geraldes Barba are at the root of this project. In a landscape where vineyards predominated, the wine business was very important to the family and filled all their time on the farm. From walks in the vineyards to helping with the harvest and conversations at the table, his taste for quality wine grew. He inherited his grandfather's relationship with wine and his love of making it well. Thus, Murgas, named after the estate where it is produced, was born, focussing on niche production and expressing the region and the family's history.
WINEMAKER - Bernardo Cabral
"It's a privilege to make wines in one of the oldest wine regions in the world. It's where I started and where I developed my passion for great white wines. Murgas represent history, terroir and quality. It is with respect and humility that we cherish the vineyard every day. The wines are the fruit of this philosophy, letting their cradle speak louder."
BUCELAS DEMARCATED REGION
The first legal mentions of the Bucelas wine region date back to the time of the Monarchy in 1908. It is located 25 kilometres north of Lisbon, in the Trancão valley. The vineyards are planted on soils that correspond to the traditional "caeiras", predominantly derived from marl and hard limestone. It benefits from a specific microclimate; a cold climate in winter and a temperate one in summer. However, there are great thermal fluctuations during this period. The grape variety that gives this famous white VQPRD (Quality Wine Produced in a Demarcated Region) its unmistakable organoleptic characteristics is Arinto, produced in an exceptional terroir.
TERROIR
Murgas benefits from a unique terroir with limestone and marl soils on a south-west slope, protected from the Atlantic winds by a mountain range, giving rise to wines of unique minerality and freshness.
The Quinta das Murgas vineyards are located in Freixial on limestone slopes in the Bucelas region. It is located about 25 kilometres north of Lisbon, in the Lusitanian basin, whose soils date back to the Jurassic period. The soil is composed of calcareous marl and crystalline limestone, where we can find fossils such as trigonia, oysters and various bivalves like buchotrigonia freixialensis and anchispirocyclina lusitânica.
CLIMATE
With a particular microclimate, it is characterised by being damp and cold in winter, while in summer it is hot and dry during the day, contrasting with cool nights. This allows for perfect ripeness, reflecting the mineral and fresh style of the great DOC Bucelas wines.
VINEYARDS
The vineyard, currently covering 12 hectares, has Arinto as the dominant variety, but also includes Esgana Cão (1 hectare) and Touriga Franca (2 hectares). Planted at a density of 4,000 plants per hectare, it follows a bilateral cordon system.
