With over 750 years of history and a unique beauty accompanied by the waters of the Douro River, Quinta dos Frades is one of the largest and most beautiful properties in the Douro Wine Region.

Originally called Quinta da Folgosa, due to its location in the parish of Folgosa, municipality of Armamar, the origins of Quinta dos Frades date back to the 13th century when it was donated to the monks of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, in 1256. Administered for centuries by the monks, Jerónimo de Almeida Brandão e Souza, 1st Baron of Folgosa, won it at public auction in 1841. The Quinta remained in his possession and that of his heirs for a century.

In 1941, Comendador Delfim Ferreira, an important industrialist and booster of the Portuguese economy in the 20th century, acquired it and began a rehabilitation process, modernizing production and leisure infrastructures. The method of planting vines on a free slope was introduced, replacing the small traditional vines on walled terraces.

Included in the Douro Demarcations, carried out between 1757 and 1761, visible through a Pombaline landmark on the property, the quality of the wine was recognized from an early age and for decades it was produced exclusively for other wineries.

In 2008, the fourth generation of Delfim Ferreira decided to take advantage of the potential of the vineyards, starting a new era in Quinta's history. The first table wine with the “Quinta dos Frades” brand is produced and the recognition achieved led to the creation of new private label wines, including a special edition dedicated to Comendador Delfim Ferreira and a notable Vintage Port Wine.

The wines are produced from old vine varieties that are over 90 years old, planted at an altitude between 50 and 250 meters above sea level, with new vines that are around 40 years old. The presence of Touriga Franca stands out in old vines as the great Douro variety, adapted to both table wines and fortified wines. Some of the dozens of dominant varieties at Quinta dos Frades are Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Branca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Carvalha, Donzelinho and Rabigato. The exposure of the vines to the east and west is essential for achieving balance in the different agricultural years, thus giving the wines produced a variety of aromas, flavours and structure that guarantee the uniqueness of Quinta dos Frades.
