Folgasão

It is a rare caste that has almost disappeared from the Portuguese mainland. One of the reasons for its near extinction was the great tendency that the caste has for rotting and not resisting many times until the harvest time. In Madeira Island, it is known as Terrantez or Terrantez da Madeira and it was there that it became famous. It is considered a noble caste used for Madeira Wine of the half sweet and half dry type. The bunches are small, compact and made up of small yellowish-green berries. The wine has a mineral flavour with a dominant acidity, which contributes to the high quality of the fortified Terrantez wines. As it is considered a rare grape variety, people have attributed a popular saying to it: "Don't eat Terrantez grapes or give them away, God made them for wine".
