Sercial

Sercial is an indigenous Portuguese grape variety also known by the name of Esgana-Cão. From an oenological point of view, it is interesting for its high acidity. In warm areas, it presents a mineral and citric acidity, with excellent ageing potential, noble aromas, of green fruits and mineral notes. The main purpose of this grape variety is to improve other wines with insufficient acidity. For this reason, it is customary to blend Sercial with other varieties. The following grape varieties are recommended for blending: Bical, Boal, Malvasia Fina, Rabo de Ovelha, Síria and Trincadeira das Pratas. It is currently almost exclusively planted on the Island of Madeira. It produces the famous fortified wine Sercial da Madeira, a dry wine that after ageing acquires exceptional characteristics.
