This secular grape variety originates from Sicily. Its name means "Black from Avola" and evokes the very dark and distinctive colour of these grapes and the town of Avola located on the southeast coast of Sicily. Nero d'Avola, also known as Calabrese, is planted all over Sicily, but the main production areas are in Eloro, Pachino and Avola. The wine produced with this grape variety has a bright ruby colour that evolves to more intense colour, with purple hues that tend towards garnet. It is full-bodied, tannic and suitable for ageing. Depending on where is it planted, it acquires different aromas due is a grape variety intrinsically linked to the soil. In the southeast of Sicilian Island, the wines are more elegant with notes of dry fruits. The wines from the central zone have red fruit aromas, such as cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant and plum, and are balsamic and spicy. In western Sicily, they are fuller-bodied and more intense. With ageing, they develop aromas of cocoa, chocolate, carob, cinnamon, leather and liquorice. The structure of Nero d'Avola wines harmonises well with dishes rich in flavour. If lighter and less aged, they can pair well with rich fish dishes such as tuna.
