Grenache, or as called in Spain, Garnacha Tinta, is one of the most planted grapes in the world. Its origin dates back to the ancient Kingdom of Aragon, now the east of Spain and the south of France. The variety spread rapidly south and eastwards in the hot and dry Mediterranean climate: Corsica, Sardinia, southern Italy, Sicily, Croatia and even Greece. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it also thrived throughout non-European regions: Australia, North Africa and California. It originates intense colour and high-alcohol wines, so it is generally used in blends to achieve a better balance. Depending on the region where it is grown, they offer different aromas. The most recognised are red fruits, particularly strawberries and raspberries, wild herbs, and spices notes such as black pepper, star anise, or liquorice. Be aware Grenache is the grape variety most important for blending one of the most famous and valued wines: Chateauneuf du Pape and, more recently, Priorat. The spicy notes of a Grenache wine make it a perfect match for some spicy and herbal dishes. It goes well with vegetables, roasted meats and several ethnic dishes. In the European Union, it appears in the catalogue of grape varieties of several countries: Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain.
