Terrantez

Referred to since 1512 is a grape variety of great tradition, a rare variety that has almost disappeared from the Portuguese mainland, also known by Folgazão name. One of the reasons for its near extinction was the high susceptibility to rotting and often not resisting until the harvest season. Currently has a small representation, existing only in the Dão region. It became famous on Madeira Island, where his name is Terrantez or Terrantez da Madeira. It is considered a noble caste used for Madeira Wine of the half-sweet and half-dry type. The bunches are small, compact and made up of small yellowish-green berries. The wine has a mineral flavour with a dominant acidity, contributing to the high quality of fortified wines. As it is considered a rare grape variety, people have attributed a popular saying to it: "Don't eat Terrantez grapes or give them away due God made them for wine".
