Quinta da Ribeira da Pêga Marufo 2024

11,90 €

A pure red wine made from an ancestral grape variety of the Beira Interior vineyards. Marufo is an old, enigmatic and challenging grape variety.
The wine shows an open ruby colour, clean and bright, preserving in its youth the delicate aromas and flavours characteristic of the grape and must. On the palate it is fresh and smooth, with hints of slightly underripe raspberry and blueberry, finishing with a light vegetal and balsamic note.

Quinta da Ribeira da Pêga covers a total area of 70 hectares, 30 of which are dedicated to vineyards. It is located around two kilometres south of Pinhel, at an average altitude of 600 metres, and is partly bordered by a stream from which it takes its name.

As far back as records show, the estate has always had a considerable vineyard area, with documentation indicating that a wine from the 1887 vintage was sent to participate in an exhibition of Portuguese wines in Berlin in 1888.

In the 1990s, a vineyard restructuring project began — still ongoing today — leading to the replanting and expansion of the vineyard area, prioritising traditional regional grape varieties such as Rufete (Tinta Pinheira), Marufo (Mourisco), Síria (Roupeiro) and Fonte Cal. Plots of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro were also planted.

The various vineyard plots differ in exposure, slope and orientation. What they share is the same poor, stony granite soil, with some quartz outcrops, and a climate marked by very hot summers with large diurnal temperature variations and cold, relatively dry winters. These conditions limit yields and challenge the resilience of the grape varieties, the vines and the people who work them. More recently, the vineyard area has continued to grow and renew itself with the planting of additional varieties.

Viticulture is conducted under an integrated production system, aiming for the rational and limited use of plant protection products, together with cultural practices suited to the crop’s objectives and its coexistence with the other plant and animal species present in the vineyard ecosystem.
