João José le Cocq acquired Quinta do Prado (Castelo de Vide, Serra de São Mamede) in 1837 and there are records of wine and sparkling wine production in that place at least since 1851. "... and drank with delight the first Portuguese wine of the type of Champagne (...) was savoured by D. Fernando, who in 1852 sent to thank the farmer of the Prado (...) some bottles that the illustrious winemaker had sent him as a gift." (João António Gordo, The Le Cocq in Portugal, 1942). And in a note from 1851: "the proprietor has well-equipped his wine cellar of a gaseous wine very similar to the Champagne, credited in Lisbon with the special name of Vinho do Prado."
