Castello del Terriccio has an ancient history. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, the bishop of Pisa, nephew of Pope Boniface VIII, granted the property to the counts of Gaetani. At the end of the 18th century, that branch of the family was left without heirs and Terriccio was bought by the Poniatowski princes, emigrants from Poland, to whom the property belonged until the first half of the 20th century. The Poniatowski family transformed the fortified reality of the castle into an agricultural property for the production of wheat, olives and grapes. Terriccio's modern history begins in the first half of the 20th century, when the property was acquired by the Marqueses Serafini Ferri. With the important improvements made in the 1920s, the Serafini Ferri family brought to the company a physiognomy very close to the current one. Until the seventies, the farm was divided between 63 families living in the town of Terriccio, which is so famous for its cereal activity.
It is Gian Annibale Rossi de Medelana (1942-2019), that Castello del Terriccio owes the notoriety that he currently enjoys in the world of wines. After inheriting the company in 1975, he decides to transform it into a research place of excellence in vineyards and wines, keeping the ancient character intact and defending a territorial heritage of great value and extraordinary beauty.
The current owner, Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana, left his financial career to devote himself to the management of the family's agricultural activities and the direct management of Castello del Terricio.
