Bodega Colomé was founded in 1831, probably by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. In 1854, his daughter Ascensión, who married to José Benjamín Dávalos, brought the first French pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to Colomé. Grapes from three vineyards, planted in that year, are still used in the production of Colomé Reserva wines. Colomé Estate belonged to Isasmendi-Dávalos families for 170 years. Donald Hess acquired it in 2001.

Donald and Ursula Hess first visited the Calchaquí Valleys in 1998. They were searching for the perfect terroir and the ideal weather to produce truly unique Argentinean wines. What they discovered here was beyond their expectations: they found their second home. The grandeur and natural beauty of Colomé inspired and rejuvenated them. In 2001, they purchased Colomé. Since then, they created the recent history of Colomé, the richest in achievements and developments, both for Winery and the people of Colomé.

Their vision includes social responsibility towards the people of Colomé. Hess family contributed to the building of the village community centre and the church, and the betterment of the school and the community housing. Nowadays, Colomé is the source of employment and income for most of the village inhabitants.

Wine Making Practices
Fermentation with indigenous yeasts, minimizing intervention in all processes. Thanks to the altitude of the area, grapes generate adequate natural acidity so no additives are needed. The grapefruit is enhanced minimizing the use of wood to preserve the distinct flavour, the freshness, the intensity and natural robustness obtained in Colomé. The red wines are aged; however, new barrels are seldom used.

Malbec
This variety originally comes from France. In many parts of the world, it is known as “the black grape” because of the bright inky purple tone it presents in its youth. In Argentina, Malbec has arisen to great prominence. It is the red variety that has best adapted to the country’s soil since it found the ideal ecological conditions for growing and developing; thus producing exceptional wines.

Higher altitude terroirs produce Malbec wines with perfect acidity, intense colour, and sweet abundant tannins, which are suitable for barrel ageing. In lower-altitude areas, Malbec wines are less concentrated and ripen faster.
