Glen Carlou Vineyards is minutes away from the university town of Stellenbosch and less than 35 minutes drive from Cape Town. Situated in the Simonsberg-Paarl region of South Africa’s Western Cape, the estate was transformed from being a dairy farm in 1985 to a wine farm.
The wines of Glen Carlou are individualistic and honest expressions of their terroir.
In the Vineyards
Significant investments have been made in the vineyards since 2016 with the change in ownership of the property, back into South African hands. Amongst several innovative and data driven practices undertaken, was the installation of soil probes. These read the soil moisture content back to Marius every 30-minutes. With this advanced approach to soil science there is a direct link to water and electricity cost savings as irrigation is reduced.
A vineyard replanting programme is currently underway. With the probes and a pressure monitoring system, Marius Cloete, the viticulturist, still trusts the feel of the leaves. Even on the hottest day of the year, sun facing leaves which feel cool to the touch, signal a vine that is not water stressed.
Cellar & Winery
The winery was designed to be practical, from receiving grapes through primary production processes to the bottling line and warehouse storage areas. An underground cellar was built into the mountainside to benefit from ideal conditions for wine maturation. It currently holds French and American oak barrels.
Johnnie Calitz @ GLEN CARLOU
Johnnie’s devotion to his craft is not only highlighted by trophies, medals and awards, but more so by the sheer delight he exudes when a smile is raised as he sees his wines being enjoyed. He is ably assisted by Philip Theron, whose recognition as a recent Diners Club Young Winemaker finalist, reflects the mentorship extended by Johnnie. He guides his team, as he does the wines, to being the best they can be.
Integrity & Sustainability
Sustainable Wine South Africa (SWSA) is the alliance between the Wine and Spirit Board, the Integrated Production of Wine scheme and Wines of South Africa. Together they drive the South African wine industry’s commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly production. A certification seal is applied on each bottle once it has met the exacting requirements of the Wine and Spirit Board.
Glen Carlou proudly has dual Integrated Production of Wine certification for both vineyard and winery practices.
