Soil Planted in clay and limestone soils, on a gentle slope facing south, the vine rows are oriented north-south. The vineyard is managed under an accurate sustainable agriculture farming system.
Winemaking The grapes were handpicked to small boxes at early morning hours. Cold maceration for 48 hours. Temperature-controlled, 24ºc – 26ºc, alcoholic fermentation.

RG Rovisco Garcia brand originates from the Carvalho Rovisco Garcia family who have been farming their land in the county of Avis in the Upper Alentejo for generations.

The estates of RG Rovisco Garcia are truly a mirror of this inner region of Portugal; low population density, gentle hills and cork oak forest, some green oak and pasture lands where a local breed of beef cattle graze free. Umbrella pine, vineyard, and olive tree, they all make for a rich and diverse ecosystem.

In 1998, Maria Antónia de Carvalho Rovisco Garcia turned over the management of the property that she had inherited from her parents to her two sons Francisco and António José. Thus began a new and dynamic phase of investment in the olive groves and vineyards.

The company RG - Herdades do Monte Novo e Conqueiro – Produtos de Quinta, Vinhos e Azeites do Alentejo, ACE was created in 2008 to sell the RG products.

The Vineyards
Herdade do Monte Novo included a small plot of old vines. In 2001, the excellent terroir in combination with favourable sun exposure led the family to opt for the planting of new vines, currently covering 28 hectares.

The varieties were carefully chosen in the search to identify those that are best adapted to this part of the Upper Alentejo and from which it would be possible to extract superior quality grapes and, thereby, truly excellent wines.

Aragonez and Syrah predominate, although, in order to provide complexity to the wine, some more complex red varieties were also planted, such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The white grape varieties are Arinto and Antão Vaz.

The principle that a good wine begins in the vineyard guided every step of the setting up the new vineyard, from the choice of the grape varieties and clones to the use of the most up to date grape growing technology.

Equipment for monitoring the weather and the humidity of the soil were also installed together with a drip irrigation system. Together, these allow controlling pests, disease and the availability of water.

Just like the forest areas, so too is the RG Rovisco Garcia vineyard managed in a sustainable way, under the Integrated Production programme.

The attentive selection of the grape varieties, careful cultivation and thorough winemaking, in conjunction with dedication and commitment, help them to achieve their goal: to obtain modern and elegant wines with the character and expressiveness of the Alentejo.
