Romana Vini produces its wines in two different properties: Quinta do Porto Nogueira and Quinta da Escusa. Family Estates
Quinta do Porto Nogueira is located in Alguber, Cadaval, which distances circa 70 km north from Lisbon. Having its origins back to the first half of the XVIII century, this place was in the possession of the same family until 1980. Thereafter around 1980 it was donated to the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. It is a Romana Vini Estate since 2004.

Quinta da Escusa is located in the very particular location of Senhora da Escusa, near Rio Maior, which is circa 70 km northeast from Lisbon, between the rural villages of Quintas and Vale Barco. Some of Quinta da Escusa's lands belonged to the grandparents and parents of the current owners who, for decades, have worked there doing agriculture and viticulture.

Denomination Romana Vini
Quinta do Porto Nogueira's secular house is leaning against the Roman Bridge over the Arnóia little river, which used to be the passage from the Roman road that connected Collippo (near Leiria) to Eburobrittium (Óbidos), which would finally lead to Olisipo (Lisbon). The bridge witnessed the Roman presence in the region and inspired the denomination Romana Vini, a Family Winery.

4-Leaf Clover Symbol
The 4-leaf clover is the symbol of the winery and is the aggregating element of their brands. It is a rare herb, of good omen, whose symbology goes back to Celtic traditions. The 4 leaves in the cross symbolize the sacred, the unity, the balance of nature in its perfect cycle: the 4 seasons, the 4 phases of the moon, the 4 cardinal points, the 4 elements of nature. It is this balance, this perfect and harmonious cycle of nature that Casa Romana Vini seeks to respect, integrate and reflect in each wine.

Sustainability and Biodiversity
The vineyards were planted in the best terroirs, which have been occupied by vine-growing for hundreds of years now. Intervention in good time, the rigor, the responsibility, and their affection for the practice of wine-producing, are the greatest guarantee of the quality of these wines.

The vineyards are cultivated with low soil mobilization and they do not use herbicides. Soil enrichment is made with natural manure. They adopt environmentally sustainable practices and they are certified by the Integrated Production Standards.

In 2019 Casa Romana Vini began the implementation of a 3-year plan for the certification of our vineyards in Organic or Biologic Mode.

All the energy consumed in the winery and at wine tourism is produced in Quinta do Porto Nogueira, from renewable sources (solar), which ensures self-sufficiency energy.

To this end, they maintain a permanent afforestation and reforestation program on the grounds surrounding the winery and vineyards, certified by FSC - Forest Stewardship Council standards.

The Vineyards of Quinta do Porto Nogueira
The soil is clay, bearers of natural freshness, without watering, being kind of unique and marked by both the influence of a natural microclimate of the foothills of Serra de Todo-o-Mundo (“All-the-World Mountain”) and the proximity to the Atlantic Sea, which is 20 km away. Each portion of the 17 hectares vineyards in Quinta do Porto Nogueira – which are DOC Óbidos classified - is treated and valued as unique and different.

This natural freshness and salinity are excellent for the production of white grapes Arinto, Alvarinho, Encruzado, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay and very conducive to the production of red grapes, such as the Pinot Noir and Touriga Nacional.

The Vineyards of Quinta da Escusa
The soil is sandy but fertile, located between Serra de Aire e Candeeiros (“Aire and Candeeiros Mountain”) and Serra de Montejunto (“Montejunto Mountain”), south of Tagus River, on the Ribatejo heath, marked by a hot summer climate, where grapes ripen faster. Each portion of the 10 hectares vineyards in Quinta da Escusa – which are DOC Santarém classified - is treated and valued as unique and different.

These lands produce excellent red grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Tinta Miúda, Sousão, Castelão and Syrah. Additionally, white grapes are produced as well in this property: the Portuguese Arinto and Moscatel Alexandria.

Choosing Every Grape
Only the best-selected fruit is used in winemaking process. They adopted a rigorous Grape Selection Process that assures the selection of the best grapes: pre-harvested grapes, bunches selection while harvesting and in the cellar, and final selection of berries on the table.

The Cellar
Only grapes harvested in their vineyards are used to produce their wines. The white grapes, when pressed, are fermented in small vats. Both our Mono-varietal and Reserva blend white wines are aged in French or American oak barrels under fine lees, with batonnage.

On the other hand, the red ones are gently trampled and macerated in mills, following the fermentation in small vats. Part of Harvest red wines and both Mono-varietal and Reserva blends are aged in French or American oak barrels from the well-known cooperages French Tonnellerie Séguin Moreau and Portuguese Tonnellerie JM Gonçalves.
