The estates have a total área of 15ha, are located in Ervedosa do Douro, in the heart of the best wine producing area, known as Cima Corgo, which offers the ideal balance between the excessively rich soils of the Baixo Corgo and the intense heat of the Douro Superior. The different microclimates of the two estates produce very different results, the goal is to obtain different wines and, combining the different characteristics of each one, such as balanced wines, rich in identity and elegance.
Quinta do Malhô
Quinta do Malhô has 5ha of vineyards set at an altitude of 300 meters in the Valley of Rio Torto. It enjoys a wide sun exposure with south-southwest facing. The average age of the vines are about 40 and 90 years old. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Sousão, Rufete, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, among others, testify the great quality of the wines produced here, which are characterized by an exceptional concentration of aromas, great tannic structure, and perfect balance.
Quinta Beira Douro
Quinta Beira Douro has 10ha of old vineyards - about 80 years old, located on the left bank of the Douro River, with many natural advantages, besides the vineyard heritage, the quality of the rocky shale soils, with excellent draining benefit, which allows the water reaches the deep roots of the vines. Another great advantage is the exposure to north and consistency of the climate, blessed with a favorable combination of temperate and Mediterranean influences. The grapes enjoy slower and harmonious maturation providing wines with distinctive qualities - freshness, minerality, elegance, complex and with a great ability to mature in bottle.
Traditional Lagares and ageing in Clay Pot Amphora
Quinta do Malhô is the main winemaking and aging center of wines produced from both Estates, but it is in the traditional lagares of Quinta Beira Douro that high range wines are vinified . The brands that give origin to this wine category are - Quinta do Malhô Vinhas Velhas - Quinta Beira Douro Vinhas Velhas - and Quinta Beira Douro - Dádiva. The winemaking process to these wines are based on handmade methodology. Grapes are picked by hand in a rigorous sorting, the grapes are transferred to traditional lagares, it is chilled, undergoes pre- fermentation maceration for three days, and is treaded by foot twice a day. Finally, the pulp are transferred into cement vats. Later, in the aging room of Quinta do Malhô, wines are stored using 500 liter barrels or using clay pot - Amphora. The aging inside Amphoras is an innovative method in Douro that we have been implementing since 2012 and only applied to Quinta Beira Douro - Dádiva. In this way we intend to achieve a natural wine, full of identity, made by handmade methods, a true return to the past, and healthier as well.
