The Palmeirim D'Inglaterra wine of owes its name to a famous 17th century cavalry novel. XVI, written by the Francisco de Moraes, common ancestor of the owners of these farms. "De by Si muy bueno", this is how Miguel Cervantes described this work in Don Quixote De la Mancha. The label was designed by Augusto Cid, a famous Portuguese cartoonist.
The wine-growing region of Trás-os-Montes, in northeastern Portugal, is divided into three sub-regions: Chaves, Valpaços and Planalto Mirandês. Mountainous, with a dry climate, very hot in the summer and very cold in winter, it is crossed by the tributaries and sub-tributaries of the river Douro. In its deep valleys the Mediterranean influence continues, where, since the time of the Romans, famous wines have been produced.
It is in this sub-region of Chaves, between the valleys of Tâmega and Ribeira de Oura, in the parishes of Oura, Selhariz, Faiões and Vila Verde da Raia, in granite soils with sandy texture, and in others of schist origin, the estates where this wine was born.
Its current owners come from families long rooted in these lands and wanted to preserve the memory of their ancestors, producing a quality wine that, combined with other activities, dignified the culture of this unique territory. In this way, they defend the heritage they inherited and participate in the development of a sustainable economy.
The castes are mostly Portuguese. Harvesting is carried out manually by caste and vinification is done in traditional winery where innovations were made to guarantee a fermentation with temperature control. Rui Cunha and Sérgio Alves are responsible oenologists.
