The name Pala da Lebre comes from an ancestral history; still today we find in the property a shallow deep-water fraga, where the hares were sheltered to protect themselves from the natural enemies, the wine of Pala da Lebre was nicknamed, in honor of the thousands of hares that for several centuries used the property as a refuge.
In the oldest wine-growing region in the world was born in the 90s, that which would later be called Quinta da Penalva. This arises from the junction of small plots, mostly old vines, inherited from ancestors for whom the cultivation of the vine had little secrecy, given that they had always done so. Later on, and with the present owner, more parcels were added, thus joining old vines, new plantations, farmed with the latest planting techniques.
In 2006, the current owner decided to create a new brand of wine, made with the production of grapes from Quinta da Penalva. He thought it was "a pity not to take advantage of a raw material of such good quality to do what he knew best (the wine)." The Pala da Lebre wine is born, a wine of excellence, which comes from the finest grapes and the best terroir, having as a backdrop a microclimate of excellence.
Quinta da Penalva is located in Pinhal do Norte and Pombal de Ansiães, Carrazeda de Ansiães municipality, Bragança district. It is in the demarcated region of the Douro, more concretely in the Superior Douro. The entire property is bathed by the Tua River, a tributary of the right bank of the Douro River.
On the banks of the river you find Quinta da Penalva, accompanied by irregular relief and steep slopes. The rocky banks form walls that rise towards the mouth, in the Douro, almost like protecting the river.
Located at about 400 meters of altitude, Quinta da Penalva benefits from very atypical climatic conditions creating conditions for the growth of the best and finest grapes of the Douro demarcated region.
