The Arrochela e Camizão family has been producing Vinho Verde in the Amarante and Sousa sub-regions since 1910. João Camizão is the 4th generation of the family from Porto and, after graduating in Telecommunications Engineering, began a career in telecommunications. In 2007, he worked in India for two and a half years.

And it was in India that he realised that he had to follow the family's winemaking history, to continue the legacy. After this time, João returned inspired to create 'Sem Igual' with the unconditional support of his family.

His first harvest of 'Sem Igual' was in 2012. The great differentiation and challenge was to create a 'Sem Igual' Vinho Verde that is not a traditional style made with local grapes, but rather a white, off-gas, full-bodied, extremely dry wine that needs time in the bottle. It has high acidity and a long, persistent finish.

The vineyards

Terroir and soil type
Most of Sem Igual's vineyards are located in the sub-region of Sousa, Meinedo - Lousada, 30 minutes from the city of porto. There are about 10 hectares of vines on granite and gravel soils. The vines are between 4 and 70 years old, with a unilateral ascending cordon and a system of branches in the old vines.

They are situated between 200 and 300 metres above sea level and most of the vines face south in a semi-sloping configuration, with the exception of the vines with spurred formations.

Varieties and characteristics
Arinto has a large, conical and very compact bunch. It has a good acidity, a variety with some citrus fruit, sometimes with some minerality and personality, and it develops well with ageing.

The Azal variety has medium to large, cylindrical, very compact but uniform grapes. The skin is greenish, sometimes slightly pink, thick and the pulp is firm, slightly juicy and simple in flavour. When ripe, it produces wines with a delicate and characteristic aroma, albeit of low intensity, slightly acidic and fruity (lemon and green apple).

Vinification
During the harvest, if necessary, the grapes are harvested in segmented periods to ensure the correct ripeness of the grapes and to obtain the correct blend. Most of the wines ferment in stainless steel vats for about 8 days at a temperature of 17°C. After fermentation (around 10 days), they are aged in stainless steel vats for 6 months (with the exception of ‘Sem Mal’ and ‘Sem Igual Ramadas Wood’ wines).

‘Sem Igual’ wines do not contain any traces of animal origin.

It is not organic, but organic substances such as copper or sulphur are regularly used for treatment. Synthetic substances are used when there is a need to prevent certain diseases (but always in minimal quantities).
