The Fitapreta team was first formed by the young Portuguese winemaker António Maçanita and the experienced English consultant and viticulturist David Booth with the launch of their first wine, Preta, in 2004.
The property is located in the Alto Alentejo region, 10Km from Évora, in the Paço do Morgado de Oliveira. A medieval Paço founded in 1306 where the Fitapreta winery, a cork building built in 2017 and part of Fitapreta's vineyards are located.
The Fitapreta Vinhos estate started to be built at the end of the 14th century, but underwent changes over the centuries, especially during the 19th century, when the Saldanha family took over the building. The recovery of the estate's buildings is being done respecting its history and always with archaeological monitoring. In an area yet to be rehabilitated was found what is believed to be the oldest wine cellar in Évora. Today it is known that the entire Paço do Morgado de Oliveira dates from the fourteenth century, making this one of the oldest buildings in Évora.
Thus, Fitapreta acquired 87% of the estate's Paço, with the responsibility of its restoration and the right to its exclusive usufruct, with the family keeping the rest, in a testimony of continuity in what was one of the oldest and most important Morgados of Portugal, the Morgado de Oliveira.
The Winery
Inside the Palace, in the Sala dos Arcos, is the white wine cellar. This is where the Fitapreta white wines are born, of talha and vat, from indigenous and red wines, from old and new vines. It is also the winemaker António Maçanita's testing cellar where he gives freedom to his ideas and dreams. Still in the Palace, all the wines that age in French oak barrels are reserved, distributed by the Sala das Colunas and the Palace Chapel.
It is in the new winery, located in the building built by Fitapreta, that the production of reds is located. A winery built with a non-interventionist and sustainable vision, where the masses circulate by gravity, the fermentations are spontaneous and the wines sleep in stainless steel or in amphora, later they can be sent to the Palace Chapel to rest some more.
Fitapreta's new vineyards surround the new winery and the Palace with the varieties Arinto, Baga, Tinta Miúda, among others. The remaining vineyards are in special places between Évora, Redondo, Borba and Fronteira. One of these vineyards, a very special one, the Chão dos Eremitas vineyard is located at the foot of Serra d'Ossa, a place where vineyards have been planted continuously since the 14th century.
The Team
In 2008, the team is strengthened with Sandra Sárria who, in 2015, was invited by António Maçanita to embrace the Fitapreta project, as a partner.
Currently, the Fitapreta Vinhos team is led by the two winemakers António and Sandra. Together they form a passionate team dedicated to wine, to the recovery of grape varieties and to an old way of making wine.
