The wines created by Portugal Boutique Winery are unique, genuine and have their own identity. Wines that, although so different from each other, reflect their origin. Its geography. They are wines from Portugal. Authentic, fresh and with character. Wines that define the Portuguese soul.
Portugal Boutique Winery was born from the desire to preserve and disseminate the Portuguese wine wealth, with centuries-old roots and so present in our culture.
It was in the Douro Valley - the first demarcated region in the world - that PBW took its first steps, revealing the specificities of its different terroirs and vinifying grapes from vines with different soils, altitudes and different solar exposures.
The evolution of the project has posed new challenges for PBW. Thus, it was decided to move to other wine regions, which led to Dinamite, a sparkling wine made in Bairrada, and Gorro, a white wine produced in the Vale do Lima, Vinho Verde region.
The wines created by Portugal Boutique Winery are unique, genuine and have their own identity. Wines that, although so different from each other, reflect their origin. Its geography. They are wines from Portugal. Authentic, fresh and with character. Wines that define the Portuguese soul.
It was based on this idea of territory, soil and lusa identity that Ricardo and Nuno created their wines. Because these are nothing more than a reflection of what Portugal is, of its diversity and wealth, manifests in the landscape, culture and geography.
The Winemakers
Nuno Morais Vaz
Agronomist and Winemaker, he had his first contact with the world of wine while still an high school student. Influenced by his grandfather, a wine grower in the Douro region, he did an internship at the Ramos Pinto Cellars, in Vila Nova de Gaia, an experience that would ultimately shape his interests, being decisive in academic and professional choices. Joins the University of Sciences of Porto, attending the 3rd year of Agronomic Engineering. Soon after, he graduated in Oenology, from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), in Vila Real, with Ricardo Sarrazola, his friend and future partner, as a colleague.
After completing his Bachelor's Degree, and already having a vintage experience in the Douro, Bairrada and Dão, Nuno decides to extend his oenological knowledge and travels to another continent. It is in Marlborough, New Zealand, exploring the vineyards and the proximity to producers in the region that Nuno awakens to a new and a different way of looking and thinking about wine.
Returning to Portugal, he meets Anselmo Mendes, “Mister Alvarinho”, his friend, mentor and his greatest source of inspiration. From here to the realization of his dream was a step. In 2016, together with a friend, he created Portugal Boutique Winery, a wine company focused on the production of avant-garde wines. Wines capable of breaking with the austerity and classicism of the Douro.
Ricardo Sarrazola
Producer and winemaker, has always been passionate about wine and its culture. Although he does not descend from a family of wine producers, he has shown very early an enormous curiosity for the wine world when, during family dinners, his father, a great connoisseur of wines, offered him wine tastings and allowed him to discover some of them. This passion ended up being determinant when the time came to choose a career path. He enrols in the oenology and viticulture course, in UTAD (Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro’s university), in Vila Real, being given the opportunity to get to know in loco several Portuguese wine-producing regions (under a harvest traineeship), like Bairrada, Douro and Alentejo.
After finishing his studies and already as an oenologist, Ricardo seeks to expand his experience to other countries and continents, like Australia, Uruguay and Bordeaux. The contact with other wine-producing cultures, revealing different approaches and ways of thinking the wine was crucial to his oenological training and enrichment.
In the aftermath of the diversified experiences lived, he is invited to be part of the team of oenologists of Herdade do Esporão, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alentejo, where he stays for two years. In 2020, Ricardo performs one of his dreams and decides to embrace a new project – Portugal Boutique Winery – becoming a business partner of his friend and course colleague Nuno Morais Vaz and starts producing wine in 3 great Portuguese wine-producing regions – Vinhos Verdes region, Douro/Planalto Mirandês and Bairrada.
