Vinhos Imperfeitos

I love fresh, mineral, complex, deep whites and red wines with a hint of rusticity, forest and spices. I believe that the region of Dão is perfect for this type of wine, always thinking about the potential of aging, of whites and reds made by Eng. Cardoso de Vilhena in the Dão study center, a world reference, at the level of the best nectars of our world, very close to heaven … yes that’s what I want to do!

Vinhos Imperfeitos

From an early age Carlos Raposo realized his connection with nature, for that reason at the age of 16 he followed oenology and viticulture at the CVR Bairrada School. At the age of 20, he left for France, where he studied for seven years in Bordeaux and Burgundy. He obtained a degree in Viticulture from the University of Burgundy and a master’s degree in oenology from the University of Bordeaux.

During his studies, he worked at the Château Smith Haut Lafitte and Château Malescot Saint Exupery in Margaux. After that, he looked for other experiences and worked at the Quinta Sardonia in Ribera del Duero (Spain), Robert Craig in Napa Valley (USA) and Stuart Wines Company in Heathcote (Australia).

In 2011, at the age of 27, he returned to Portugal, where he started working with Dirk Niepoort. Though young, his experience around the world, passion and dedication made him the key man of Dirk, at Quinta de Nápoles in the Douro region. He worked hard to sculpt delicious wines like the Batuta, elegant as the Coche, with character as Robustus and Redoma. But also the Turris and all the other projects he has grabbed, from Dão to Vinhos Verdes. Carlos partially left Niepoort in mid-2018, continuing to work with Dirk in the Vinhos Verdes project.

In 2018, he returned to the origins, creating its own project called Imperfect Wines. Carlos is from the Dão region, knows very well the potential of the region and has long dreamed up the wines he wants to make there:

I love fresh, mineral, complex, deep whites and red wines with a hint of rusticity, forest and spices. The vineyard
One of the foundations of Vinhos Imperfeitos is to respect as much as possible the raw material that Nature miraculously offers us. They want to empower every region they work in, revealing what is purest and most essential. Thei work with vineyards where the use of natural products is a priority, where ancestral methods still prevail, treatments, pruning and other interventions in the vineyards are regulated by the phases of the moon. They work with vineyards that are mostly as old or older than their own owners (75 to 120 years old). They believe that to make a world-class wine, work must start in the vineyard, the daily monitoring of this is paramount and will dictate the success of the final product: “Wine is made in the vineyard”. Last but not least, the immense respect for the vinegrowers. They take great care and dedicate their lives to their precious vineyards.

In the cellar
After 7 years of study at the Bordeaux and Burgundy University, Carlos had at his disposal all the tools and knowledge to create perfect wines. After earning some experience working around the world, he returned to Portugal and immediately started to work with a Master named Dirk Niepoort, the business owner.

One of the first things Dick said to Carlos was that he knew that he had studied and worked in best places in the world but would like him to make his wines without chemical products. The important thing was to truly understand the origin of each grape, the terroir of each vineyard, that he “felt” the potential of each grape… He wanted authentic wines! He taught Carlos how to make wines from a different perspective, respecting the integrity of the grapes by tasting the grapes in the vineyard and trying to figure out which winemaking process. Carlos learned to observe, to let nature do, and only in case of trouble to intervene.

They always vinified wines on the edge of danger, the  philosophy was to make great wines, even knowing there would be possibilities to go less well and there would be production significant losses. On the other hand, when it did well, it did really well! A singular, authentic, pure wine… Carlos Raposo learned that the hard thing is not to touch and believe until the end in Nature…. The result of this philosophy is the mythical Niepoort wines like Batuta, Redoma Reserva, Coche, Robustus, and many others...

When Carlos left university he learned how to make perfect wines, with Dirk he learned how to make authentic wines! The truth is that these two universities complement each other and hardly work well on their own. Not being an absolute philosophy, but something in perpetual motion.
